ISIL Besieges More than Half a Million Kurds in Ayn al-Arab (Kobanê) in Northern Syria
ISIL has taken over several Kurdish villages surrounding the city of Ayn al-Arab, which is also known by its Kurdish name as Kobanê, and this led to their residents fleeing into the city, which now hosts over half a million civilian residents. Recent confrontations between ISIL and the popular civil defense forces resulted in ISIL imposing a siege around the city from all sides. The only side that is not controlled by ISIL is at the Turkish border. Since Turkish authorities have closed the border crossing there, some residents are trying to illegally cross the Syrian-Turkish border at night in order to flee the besieged city.
